What is Time Management?

Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management allows you to accomplish more in a shorter period of time, which leads to more free time, and even higher productivity. Time management is especially important for those with a lot on their plate, such as parents, entrepreneurs, busy professionals, students - really, all of us.

How to Manage Your Time More Effectively

When we look at our days, it’s easy to see that procrastination, distraction, and feeling overwhelmed can all have a major impact on how we use our time. Here are a few ideas to help you buy back some time.

  1. First, look at your day, do you manage it, or does your day manage you? Research shows the average person loses 3 hours a day to poor time management, so start by figuring out where you are losing most of your time.

  1. Be Intentional with your tasks and projects at hand. What tasks are you working on and do they have 100% of your attention? If not, ask yourself why is that. It could be due to...

  1. Distractions. Turn off your text, email, or social media notifications. Nothing messes with your focus on a project or an individual discussion more than the “ding” from your device. You can even try time-blocking different parts of your day. For instance, you dedicate one hour (8 AM-9 AM) in the morning to checking and responding to emails and then you turn off your email notifications. From 9 AM-11 AM, time block your calendar for the big project you have to solely focus on that, and so on.

  1. Lastly, if you are overwhelmed by everything on your “to-do” list, you are not alone. If you have twenty things listed, instead of working from that long list (you’re not going to get 20 things done in one day) prioritize the three things you MUST get done and put them in your calendar for the next day.
